2017 Philosophy Summer Seminar (PSSA)

Co-taught with John Hyman, University of Oxford

CYA is pleased to announce a call for applications for a series of  Philosophy Summer Seminars to be held in Athens (PSSA) starting Summer 2017. The seminars are intended for outstanding undergraduate students who are entertaining the prospect of a graduate career in philosophy. The aim is to introduce students to graduate level work and expose them to the latest research in the field. Each PSSA focuses on one philosophical topic and culminates into a week long engagement with a distinguished philosopher in the field, who will be presenting their latest research on the topic.
Students who do not have the opportunity to take high-level courses at their own institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

TOPIC of 2017 PSSA

The topic of this year’s PSSA is the Philosophy of Action and Knowledge, and the distinguished guest is John Hyman from the University of Oxford. The seminar is divided in two parts. In the first part (three weeks) we will do advanced work in the philosophy of action and knowledge, which will enable students in the second part (fourth week) to engage with John Hyman’s lectures on his latest research in his book Action, Knowledge and Will (Oxford University Press, 2015). Thus in the first part of the seminar we will study the account of action and knowledge we find in the works of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Kant, Hume, Wittgenstein, Ryle, Davidson, Anscombe, and contemporary philosophers who work in the field and in the second part we will read John Hyman’s new book together with the author himself.
The seminar meets five days a week, three hours a day for four weeks. Class size will be kept small. The course is highly intensive and is designed so as to immerse students in the state of the art research in the field and give them resources which will enable them to apply to graduate school. The readings will be demanding and students will be expected to engage with them in class. Thus, a prior exposure to analytic philosophy will be necessary. Students will be responsible for presenting some of the readings to the class and for writing one 15-20 page research paper of publishable quality with the guidance of the instructor.

Campus

The seminar will take place at the CYA Academic Center in the archaeological center of Athens, Greece. The Academic Center is located by the ancient river Ilissos and the Panathinaic Stadium and right across from the Acropolis hill.
Participants will be encouraged to explore the city of Athens and the nearby islands. Weekend outings will be organized.
